EQ in the College Classroom

By Barbara Reynolds

Barbara Reynolds recently taught a quilting class for college credit at the College of the Sequoias, using EQ5 to create materials for her class plus having her students use EQ5. We asked Barbara how her class went....

We have just completed the second semester of a college credit class called "The Art of Quiltmaking" at College of the Sequoias. This two unit class covers quilting basics as well as cultural and historical aspects, and has been very popular with both experienced and beginning quilters.

One class requirement is to design a quilt on the computer using Electric Quilt 5. This was a fun project. Beginning students were content to design their quilt, putting it on hold for future use while they worked on the sampler wall quilt designed by the instructor using EQ5.

EQ5 is a wonderful tool for the instructor. It allows original designs using both the blocks present in the EQ5 libraries and blocks designed on the drawing board. I was able to select or design the blocks and print the rotary cutting instructions which simplified my job immensely. The Santa was drawn in EQ5 and printed out as a paper pieced pattern and worked beautifully.

Two students, Leona Morris and Eileen Johns, actually made the quilts they designed. They were thrilled with the results.

Leona Morris is shown working in class and with three completed squares of a king size quilt for her grandson. The top is now completed ready for quilting.

Eileen Johns is shown with her black and white top ready for quilting and the finished quilt to the right

Using Electric Quilt in class was something everyone enjoyed -- even students who had little or no experience with computers. My only problem as the instructor is that I tend to spend too much time designing, and neglect my other classes. Other than that it is great.
