This quilt was done as a challenge quilt on TheQuiltingPost (a yahoo group). We picked a number and were assigned the color that was matched to the number. My color was Blue-green. We could only add 1 additional color.  I made my colors work by using shades of batiks and hand dyes.

Patriotic Theme Quilt Designed for Quinsippi Needleworkers 2011 quilt show. I designed the 50 6" states from traditional blocks of states, some from Dawn Leslie Stewart clip art and some by me. I won 3rd place in Home Town Stitches contest sponsored by the Hickory Stick, Pat Waelder owner. Quilts chosen by Viewers Choice. It took 2 weeks to cut out fabric for 6" blocks and 1 month to piece quilt together.

(Note: 2 snowflake blocks were acquired through a Walla Walla Valley Quilt Guild Block Lotto that I won several years ago)

My cousin was due to deliver a baby near the end of 2009 in Boston, MA. I figured it would be snowy and a very traditional city, so chose traditional blocks. I had no idea this design would be so appropriate. The baby was born before Christmas during the only blizzard there this winter. The bears are something that I think of when I consider our family connection. The ‘baby bear’ paws in the center and the ‘protective’ parent bear paws in the outside corners were representative of what happens with a newborn (bear or human!)--you need your parent to protect you. I backed it with a bear print in flannel.

I love using EQ6 to design quilts. With my recent decision to do this as a profession, I am excited to have the ease of designing quickly with EQ6. I wish fabric companies would put full repeat designs of their new fabrics on their website. I am having even more fun now that I have a Gammill long-arm and have expanded my quilting skills as well.

This design evolved over a 5 month period.  Our guild show theme was “Changing Gears” and I needed to come up with an appropriate Raffle Quilt design.  With a lot of co-chair input this is the final design for the Raffle Quilt for our guild show in September 2010.  The colors in the traditional storm at sea design were manipulated to represent actual gears with cogs and intersecting sizes.  Despite my poor photograph it is a stunning quilt.  It is actually one of the most square quilts our quilter says he’s ever worked on.

Using printouts from EQ6, the foundation paper piecing was done by various members of the guild and custom quilted by Rex McCaskill of Castle Path Quilting, Round Rock, Texas.

I made this quilt in honor of my father.  When he passed away, the thank you cards had the images of the birds -- in the 'missing man' type of formation -- with one veering off in a different direction from all the other birds.  The following quilt, "Going Home" was designed based on that card.  I used medium and light pastels to represent a sunset and appliqued the birds over the pieced base.  The words in the bottom border, "Going home..." are embroidered in metallic gold thread.  The quilting in the background, although it does not show up in the photos, is also the outlines of many more birds, that are all going in the direction of the main flock.  This is one of my favorite quilts.  It means a lot to me.

At Thanksgiving, I showed my  granddaughter, Hilary, the Electric Quilt software program. The two of us sat down and designed this quilt.  The software is so easy, a child can use it. 

I made the quilt and gave it to her for her 8th birthday.  She was thrilled.  She remembered designing it with me last November and loved to see the finished product.

I named the quilt "A Gaggle of Geese".  I used my embroidery machine to make the label, incorporating a photo of my granddaughter and myself that was taken last Thanksgiving.  I included the dates, and gave her credit for assisting with the designing.  I also incorporate a pattern of the quilt block that I used into the label. 

It was fun.  Maybe I will be able to teach her how to sew/quilt sometime in the future.

The "favorite" block is called Peanut-butter and Jelly. It looks like applique, but really is pieced.

Won 2nd place in MN Quilt Show, then donated to Holy Childhood Woman's Club for fundraiser and brought in over $2000
