Dear Jane Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I get a page not found error when I click a link with a globe next to it?
The little globes next to some links in Dear Jane Home mean they are on the World Wide Web. You need to be connected to the internet to view those links. If the program does not prompt you to connect, you may need to do so manually before clicking on one of those links.

All other pages and links in Dear Jane Home (no globes) should work without having to be connected.

Why don't I see any images in the Dear Jane Home side of the program?
Try this:

  1. Open Internet Explorer, click Tools - Internet Options.
  2. On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Multimedia section in the Settings box.
  3. Under Multimedia, put a check next to Play Animations, Play Sounds, Play Videos, Smart Image Dithering, and Show Pictures check boxes.
  4. Click OK.
  5. You can now close IE if you want.
  6. Check Dear Jane to see if the images are there now.

Why can't I play the videos?
Try this:

Solution 1 (it's just a connection thing)
For some people it works if you toggle the pages once. (In other words, after you click the "Interviews with Brenda" page at the top, then wait for the error message, then click Meet Brenda Papadakis, then click Interviews again.)

Solution 2 (you have them set not to play)

  6. Check Dear Jane to see if the videos play now.

Solution 3 (AVIs aren't set to play with Windows Media Player)

  1. On the Windows desktop, double-click My Computer.
  2. On the View menu, click Options or Folder Options.
  3. Click the File Types tab.
  4. In the list of registered file types, find AVI and click on it.
  5. Check to make sure it is set to Windows Media player.
  6. If not, you can either browse to the (WMP) windows media player exe on your computer (which could be anywhere) or use the directions in the Dear Jane Help on how to set WMP to be the default player of AVIs through WMP. Help-Dear Jane Help - Dear Jane Home-Watching Video Interviews with Brenda Papadakis.

Solution 4 (your computer doesn't like the ../ in the paths)

  1. Go to: http://www.electricquilt.com/tech/interview.htm
  2. Right-click on the page and choose View Source. The source code will appear in Notepad or Wordpad... don't touch it.
  3. Choose File-Save As from the menu. Change it from saving as text document to All Files.
  4. Browse to the following location on your hard drive:
C:\Program Files\Electric Quilt Company\Dear Jane\html\Brenda and save it as interview.htm , thus overwriting the existing file.
  5. Double click My Computer, then C drive, and go to:
    Program Files\Electric Quilt Company\Dear Jane
Click the AVI folder to select it.
  6. Choose EDIT- Cut
  7. Double-click the html folder, then the Brenda folder.
  8. Choose EDIT- Paste.

Solution 5 (your visual themes/skins for videos are interfering)

  1. Right-click on the Dear Jane desktop icon.
  2. Click Properties, then the Compatibility tab.
  3. Under Display settings, put a check next to "disable visual themes."
  4. Click OK.

Help, the same video keeps playing over and over no matter which option I choose.
This seems to be related to a setting in QuickTime player. Although the videos are set to run in Internet Explorer through Windows Media Player, Quicktime wants to do it for some reason and is interfering.

  1. Click Start > Programs > QuickTime > QuickTime Player.
  2. From the top menu bar in the QuickTime player, click EDIT > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences.
  3. Click the Browser tab.
  4. Click the MIME Settings button.
  5. Depending on your version of QuickTime and Windows you may have a different list than others. Just find (AVI) in the list and click in the box in front of it to uncheck it. Click Apply or OK.
  6. If you have a File Types button (this will depend on your version of QuickTime) repeat step 5 for this list.
  7. Click OK if you need to.
  8. Close the QuickTime Player.

Retry the interviews with Brenda. If you get a c00d132b error, see the next solution.

How do I watch an interview with Brenda if I get a script error c00d132b?
Your computer doesn't like the ../ in the paths, try this:

    C:\Program Files\Electric Quilt Company\Dear Jane\html\Brenda
and save it as interview.htm , thus overwriting the existing file.
  5. Double click My Computer, then C drive, and go to:
    Program Files\Electric Quilt Company\Dear Jane
Click the AVI folder to select it.
  6. Choose EDIT- Cut.
  7. Double-click the html folder, then the Brenda folder.
  8. Choose EDIT- Paste.

Why does my installation lock up and never go past a certain percentage when moving files?
It is most-likely your anti-virus software. You need to make sure you don't have other programs running in memory that are causing an interference with the installation program.

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Choose START - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk CleanUp.
  3. Choose C drive.
  4. Put a checkmark next to "Temporary Files" and click OK.
  5. Press CTRL, ALT and Delete together once on your keyboard.
    • If you are on Windows 95-ME, do the following:
The Close Program window will appear. Do an "End Task" on everything except for Systray and Explorer. The window will disappear after you click End Task. Press CTRL, ALT, Delete to bring it back. When Explorer and Systray are the last two left on the list, click Cancel and proceed to the next step.
    • If you are on Windows 2000, NT4, or XP, do the following:
Click Task Manager. Close everything on the Applications tab. Close Task Manager. Look in the bottom-right corner of your screen (to the left of your clock). If there are any small icons, right-click on each one and click the option that sounds like "exit" or "disable" whenever possible. Close out as many of these programs in the system tray next to the clock.
  6. Insert the Dear Jane CD. The installation should start automatically.
  7. Go through the installation.
  8. Restart your computer at the end of the installation.

Why can't my program find MSIMG32.DLL?
Your operating system is either Windows 95 or Windows NT4. Your computer lacks Windows files from Microsoft that are needed for the program to run properly, which cannot be installed on your operating system. The Dear Jane System Requirements do not list your operating system as supported.

You have two options at this point. One is to hang onto the Dear Jane program until you get an upgrade for your operating system. The other would be to return the program to the business you bought it from. If you did not buy Dear Jane from the Electric Quilt Company, have the business contact us with regards to your return.

What about the Dear Jane layouts, can I open those in EQ5?
The Dear Jane layouts are just like Dear Jane projects. The Dear Jane Layout Libraries contain the new border styles and can accept triangles. They will not work in EQ5.

What are the differences between EQ5 and Dear Jane? They are both listed as quilt design software on your website.
Both EQ5 and Dear Jane are quilt design software programs. On the quilt worktable, you have similar buttons to do similar tasks. In Dear Jane, you can only choose Horizontal or On-Point from Quilt - New Quilt. In EQ5, you have those choices plus 7 more.

On the block worktable, the differences become dramatic. In Dear Jane, you can only print and color the Dear Jane blocks from this screen. In EQ5, you can edit existing blocks and change their lines or arcs, draw new blocks from scratch, copy and paste sections, do appliqué, color and save.

Basically, with Dear Jane you will only ever have horizontal and on-point quilts and the Dear Jane blocks. In EQ5, your layouts can change, you can use our 3000+ blocks or draw your own, all with no limitations.
